How about an event on October 24?

Dear Children,

This photograph is to show you that I had fun along the way when I was walking my 1150 miles from New Orleans to the Canadian border. This fancy setup was in front of a house in northeastern Pennsylvania.

Most of you will recognize this beautiful woman who walked almost 50 miles with me in July, right before she went to Brazil to teach in the PanAmerican School in Bahia. She is my daughter, Ms. Sofia Hart, and she is the one who suggested that I have a blog especially for children. I'm so glad she did.

About your comments: thanks to all of you who wrote nice things to me. I love to hear from you. I apologize to those whose names I missed before:

Gai and Igor and someone who didn't write his or her name - thanks for your comments. Let me know if I missed anyone else.

Billy and Chris, when I was your age I didn't know what I wanted to be when I grew up. When I was around 14 I wanted to be a writer and called myself Inky because I always got ink on my fingers when I wrote with a fountain pen. Now that I'm grown up I keep finding new things that I want to do.

What can you do for the environment at your school? A special event on October 24 which is the International Day of Climate Action. Talk with your teachers about it. You can get lots of information on this website: www.350.org. You can register your event and it will be counted along with almost 1500 other events in over 100 countries. It doesn't have to be something complicated and difficult.

One requirement for the 350.org International Day of Climate Change is that you produce a photograph with the number 350 in a creative way. You can see examples on the website.

I hope to hear from you about your ideas.

Love, Nana Greta

PS - Robert, a late happy birthday for 9/9/99

Dear Nana Greta,
I love your blog!!! My birthday was last saturday (9/19/09). I think that when i grow up I want to be a lawier, but, I love taking care of hair! So, me and my mom have some ideas about me being a hair person (I dont know what you call people that cut hair). I have read some books by Jannete Rallison I LOVE her books, so, i decided about, 7 months ago, that maybe I would like to be a writer too. I dont know what to write about. I just felt like it has been a long time since i've read your blog. I think that you should come visit Ms.Sofia, and come to school with her so I can meet you! I LOVE your blog, keep writing!!!

Dear Lali,

It's wonderful to hear from you. I encourage you to believe in all the things you can imagine doing when you grow up. You don't have to decide now, and later it will be possible to do more than one thing. Lawyers can write and cut hair. Beauticians can study law and write poetry or novels. Writers often do other things in order to make money and also to hear about good stories.

Do you think you're school will do anything for October 24? I'm hoping to visit Ms. Sofia in January - will you be on vacation then?

Love, Nana Greta

Dear Nana Greta,

I really appreciate your blog! I think it is amazing that you walked so far all by yourself. It must have been an incredible experience. I also saw your article in the New York Times, which was really awesome. I am a teacher at the Pan American School with Sofia, your daughter! My students are in fourth grade and are learning about plants and the environment in science and I thought it would be important for students to read your blog. I know you are visiting Brazil soon. I hope to meet you when you come to Salvador. Will you get the chance to come to school to meet our students? I hope you didn’t get caught in that snow storm that hit the United States! Take care,

Ms. Anne

Dear Greta

I really liked your blog! How did you walk so far? I am a student from the Pan American School. How old were you when you walked so far. I think this is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How long did it take? Are you going to come to Brazil? I have been to the Grand Canyon and walked almost all the way down but I think you walked more anyway. My biggest walks were in the desert. One more thing is that I love to play soccer as a goalie.
